This is the time of year when your lovely clean, healthy children return to school, fit and ready for the winter to come. Unfortunately they may come away with more bites than bytes of computer information. Children love to get their heads together, and if one child in the school has head lice, very soon many more will be infected. Washing the hair is not the answer to this nuisance. Head lice love clean, healthy scalps. The first line of defence is regular inspection, looking behind the ears, the hairline at the back of the neck and the rest of the hair for nits attached to the hair. The second line of defence is the dust comb. Dust combing the hair can be enough to dislodge the odd louse. But be careful of tangles, the object is to keep your child happy, not tortured! There are a variety of lice treatments available from the chemist or your doctor. But superlice are upon us now, and these remedies can be ineffective as well as poisonous. Cider vinegar will dissolve the nit case. Wet the child's hair with the vinegar and leave on overnight. Wash and fine comb the hair next morning. Repeat this regularly.
